For many people, “root canal” is a scary term.
A root canal, also known as endodontic therapy, is a valuable procedure that can help save a severely damaged or decayed tooth. Prior to its development there was only one solution when a tooth became infected: extraction. Root canal therapy is highly successful and usually lasts a lifetime. Local anesthetics allow the procedure to be performed with little to no pain in most cases.
During the procedure, we remove the infected tissue inside the tooth and disinfect it. The resulting space is filled with special dental materials that will restore the tooth to its full function. In most instances we also must place a crown on the tooth to give it strength and support. Following the root canal you should be pain-free once again!
How do I know if my tooth needs a root canal?
To know for sure, we’ll need to test your tooth, but here are the most common signs:
- Severe tooth pain
- Spontaneous tooth pain for no reason
- Lingering pain induced by hot or cold beverages or foods
- Intense pain when biting (not due to a high filling)
- Swelling
- A gum pimple with regular discharge
I had a bad toothache but it’s gone away. Is my tooth ok now?
No. Unless a root canal is done the dead nerve tissue inside the tooth will fester and soon lead to a more severe secondary infection. You need to seek treatment immediately.
